Behavior

Centennial Arts Academy will be implementing a school-wide positive behavior plan this year.  The Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Committee has researched and designed an effective method that will be implemented in classrooms, school-wide, for consistency.  We believe that we are to teach the whole child, academically, behaviorally and emotionally.

Our goal for the students at Centennial is to instill positive character traits that will prepare them for the world outside of school.  Part of preparing our students is for them to have a clear understanding that each child is responsible for his/her own actions and that every choice has a consequence, positive or negative.

Here’s a brief explanation of how the behavior plan will work:

This behavior chart will be located in the front of your child’s agenda or red folder for you to reference on a weekly basis.   The student will begin every day on “ready to learn” regardless of his/her choices the prior day.  The student will have multiple opportunities to move up or down the chart, with a personally numbered clothespin, each day based on his/her choices.   “Character Cash” will be earned at the end of each day based on the level your child has achieved.  Teachers will give out the Character Cash on Friday mornings.  Throughout each month your child will have the opportunity to trade-in his/her money for small incentives or save the “Character Cash” for larger incentives offered quarterly.

Please note the incentives will be directly supported with money Centennial earns through Bruster’s Italian Ice Fundraisers.  In other words, we need your support of this fundraiser monthly!

Should you have any questions/concerns about this behavior plan please contact the school at 770-287-2044.

Beliefs

Centennial Arts Academy believes:

·       Student learning is the chief priority of the school.
·       Each student can learn when engaged in quality work and when teachers and parents set high expectations.
·       Continuous learning occurs best in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment.
·       The school, parents, and community are full partners in working toward the goal of providing children with a high quality education.
·       Each child should be taught the importance of self-discipline and be held accountable for his or her choices.

Student Motto

I respect myself and others.
I am responsible for my actions.
I treat others as I like to be treated.
I work hard to achieve my goals.

Birthday Parties/School Parties

If a student would like to celebrate a birthday with his/her class in the classroom, the parent should coordinate the event with the teacher.  Invitations to private birthday parties may be distributed at school only if the entire class is invited. Grade mothers for each classroom assume responsibility in planning and providing refreshments and favors for classroom parties.  Classroom parties are held in December, February and at the end of the year.

Change of Address /Withdrawal

Please provide your child's teacher with any address changes or if you plan to withdraw your child. Textbooks, library books, and the school agenda must be returned before records are forwarded to the next school.

 Check-Out Procedures

Early dismissal is not encouraged; however, if a parent must take a child out of school during regular school hours, they should send a note in the morning to the teacher stating the reason for checkout.  This allows the teacher time to give the child homework assignments and keeps disruptions to a minimum.  At checkout, parents must sign their children out in the office and present proof of identification.  All parents should be directed to the front office to check out his/her child.  Parents should try to schedule dental and medical appointments after the school day.  No child will be dismissed after 2:10 p.m.

Lost and Found

Clothing items found in the building or on the grounds that are unclaimed will be placed in the hallway near the drink machine.  Money, eyeglasses, keys or other items of value will be kept in the school office.  Please label all clothing, lunchboxes, etc. with the child’s first and last name so lost items can be returned to the proper owners.  At the end of each month, unclaimed lost items will be donated to needy families.

Lunchroom Program

Breakfast is served from 7:00 – 7:30.  Breakfast is at no charge for all students.

Lunches, including milk, are served daily for free. Students may also bring their lunch. Ice cream may be purchased for $.75.

Parents are invited to join their children for lunch.  The cost of an adult breakfast is $1.50 and $2.75 for lunch. If possible, parents should notify the teacher in the morning that they are planning to eat lunch so lunchroom personnel can plan for additional adults.

Media Center

The media center is open to students each day from 7:50 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. Students must receive permission from their teachers before coming to the media center to check out or return books.  All students may check out one book at a time.  Students may visit the media center no more than one time each day.  All books are due back to the media center within one week.  Students cannot check out books until an overdue book is returned or paid for if lost.    Centennial sponsors two book fairs each school year, one in the fall and another in the spring. The proceeds from the book fairs support our reading incentive programs as well as other special media events. All classes are assigned a time to visit each book fair.  When the time for the book fairs draws near, teachers include in their parent letter the time his or her class is scheduled to visit. The schedule is also included in the weekly letter from the principal.  There is a time when students can re-visit the book fair if needed.

Panda Pause

The school newsletter, the Panda Pause, is published and sent home every other Tuesday.  It serves as the school’s primary means of communicating school announcements and events to parents.  Please be sure and read the Panda Pause each week.  If a parent or teacher would like to have a school-related item included in the Panda Pause, it should be submitted in writing to Susan Burns, the school secretary, the Friday before publication.  The principal must approve all requests.

Parent Teacher Association

Centennial's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a part of the oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States.  Its membership includes the parents of students attending Centennial and the Centennial faculty and staff members.

School Hours

The school day for students begins promptly at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m.  Students arriving before 7:15 a.m. will report to the lunchroom for breakfast or to their designated waiting areas. Students arriving in the classroom after 7:45 are counted tardy.   If a student comes to school late, the parent must come in with the student to check in with the QBE clerk in the front office to receive a tardy slip.

Afternoon announcements begin at 2:25, after which students are dismissed as car riders or bus riders.  Any car rider not picked up by 2:45 will wait in the front office for their parents to come inside and pick them up.

School Visitation

Parent involvement is welcomed and appreciated at Centennial.  Board policy states that all visitors, including parents and guardians, must sign the visitor’s register in the office upon entering the school and wear a visitor’s badge. Teachers are asked to send parents back to the office if they arrive without a visitor’s badge. To protect precious instruction time, teachers ask that you contact them, if possible, if you plan to visit.

Student Medications

Whenever it is necessary for a child to take medication at school, the guidelines listed below must be followed:

Prescription medications must be brought to school in the original prescription container labeled with the student’s name, date prescribed, instructions for administering, name of drug, name of issuing health care provider, expiration date, and route medication is to be given.

Non-prescription medication (over-the-counter medications) must be brought to school in the original container along with a written parental request that includes parent contact phone number and directions for administering that states the frequency, dose, and length of administration.

The school dispenses medication only as directed on the original prescription labeled container.  It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to notify the school in writing of any changes in medication, dosage, time or administration, or any pertinent data.  A new “Medication Administration Request” and a new original prescription container must be provided indicating any changes.

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to deliver all medication to the school nurse or other designated school personnel.

Medication received at school in unlabeled bottles, pills in zip-lock bags or aluminum foil will not be administered.

Transportation

During the Open House, the Student Transportation Information Sheet was provided for you to fill out.   The Transportation Department will have a table set up in the gym to give bus route schedules.  The telephone number for the Transportation Department is 770-536-8312.  Parents should use this number if they have any bus transportation concerns.

Students who will be car riders need to be dropped off ONLY in the front of the building.  Students may not be dropped off in the back of the school or in the outside drive-through lane until after 7:30. Any changes in a student’s normal dismissal procedure must be made in writing by the parent/guardian BEFORE 2:10.  No changes in transportation can be made by phone.
